Carroll Music Spring 2016 Newsletter

As a mild winter here in NYC comes to a close, it has been a not so mild winter in our rehearsal studios and gear rental department. We’ve stayed super busy catering to a plethora of exciting musicians. From Jazz trios, to rock bands, Broadway Musicals, R&B groups, dancers, DJ’s, and orchestras, variety is the spice of life here at Carroll Music. Our staff has also expanded and we’d like to send a warm welcome to our newest percussion technician, Jon, the newest member of our tech department, Keith, and to the newest member of our cartage staff, Kameron!

We’re always striving to serve our clients to the best of our abilities and to evolve as our ever changing industry does the same, that’s why we’ve been in business since 1945. Client Spotlight

In late January, we had the pleasure of having legendary folk singer Joan Baez in for rehearsals and she was sounding as great as ever. She performed later that week at the Beacon Theater as part of her 75th birthday celebration with a ton of special guests, such as Paul Simon, Judy Collins, Mavis Staples, Jackson Browne, and many more. The show was taped for a PBS series called “Great Performances,” which will be broadcasted in June.

We’ve been fortunate to have a bunch of different Broadway Musicals in for rehearsals this winter, such as the cast, crew, and musicians from the show, “Disaster” as seen in the above photo.

Other spectacular Broadway Musicals we’ve had in for rehearsals include cast, musicians, and crew from “1776,” “Shuffle Along,” “A New Brain,” and “Tommy.”

Back in February, we had the privilege of supplying backline for legendary Country singer, Wynonna Judd for several gigs here in NYC, including shows at City Winery and for a taping at Late Night With Seth Myers. They loved our vintage drum kit including our massive 28″ Leedy kick drum, Fender Twins, Fender Blues Jr., and Ampeg bass rig.

We were very excited to supply backline and monitor mixing for Patti LaBelle and The East Coast Inspirational Singers at St. Joseph’s Church in Harlem on Wednesday. She, the band, choir, and crew were shooting a PSA for the American Lung Association. Our own sound and backline tech, Eddie Sullivan, helped set up and run this event that we were super glad to be a part of.

Always great having longtime client, friend, and world renowned drummer back in for rehearsals, Mr. Bernard Purdie. He’s well known for his signature “Purdie Shuffle” and long list of artists he’s played with such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, and Eddie Palmieri, another good friend of ours he was rehearsing with on this day. Seen here with our 2 in house drum techs, Russ (on left,) Jon, (on right) and owner Kevin in the middle.

Other notable artist and shows we’ve catered to in the last few months include: Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (of The Misfits,) Phish, Craig Finn (of The Hold Steady,) Dave Holland Trio, (including Kevin Eubanks and Obed Calvaire,) The Drowners, and “Lazarus” at the New York Theater Workshop.

Gear Spotlight

Our new and vintage drum kit selection is always growing and evolving. We’ve added a vintage 1970s Rogers Londoner 5 drum kit to our inventory. This kit sounds so warm and nice. Shell sizes are as follows:

  • 12 x 8 rack tom
  • 13 x 9 rack tom
  • 16 x 16 floor tom
  • 22 x 14 kick drum

We’ve added another classic to our guitar inventory with this brand new 2015 Gibson ES-335 Memphis in sunburst finish. This sweet baby sounds as good as it looks, and joins our other Gibson rental guitars, such as our Les Paul and J-45 acoustic. Give us a buzz when you need a killer axe for your next show or rehearsal.

We are psyched to add this awesome Allen and Heath X One 92 mixer to our DJ gear inventory.
This industry standard analogue mixer has 6 dual stereo channels, 2 aux sends, 4 band EQ, 2 headphone outputs, and many more features.
